BUTTERFLY

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

Every morning when I wake and see the sun
I yawn and stretch and wonder what I will become
Will I always be so clumsy and so small
Will I ever learn to run or must I always crawl

I want to be strong
I want to be tall
I want to see the whole wide world
And never have to fall
I wish I could fly
And one day I'm going to try
I want to be just like a butterfly

In the afternoon I start to feel so brave
But when I stretch my wings I'm told I must behave
I want to play I want a taste of everything
Even if it's bitter than I'll know that it can sting

I want to be strong
I want to be tall
I want to see the whole wide world
And never have to fall
I wish I could fly
And one day I'm going to try
I want to be just like a butterfly

And in the evening when the stars they shine
I want to touch them all but they just can't be mine
I'm tired of living in my warm and safe cocoon
I'd rather be up in the sky with the moon

I want to be strong
I want to be tall
I want to see the whole wide world
And never have to fall
I wish I could fly
And one day I'm going to try
I want to be just like a butterfly

I want to be strong
I want to be tall
I want to see the whole wide world
And never have to fall
I wish I could fly
And one day I'm going to try
I want to be just like a butterfly
I want to be just like a butterfly

NORTH STAR

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

North star hear me callin’ out your name

It’s a quiet night and the stars all look the same

How long must I patiently stand here and wait

North star hear me callin’ and shine my way

Just as soon as I find you, you slip away

I’m left trippin’ on clouds and cold rainy days

I’d like my turn in the sunshine my time to play

North star hear me callin’ and shine my way

North star hear me callin’ out your name

I took some time to find you but I can’t stay

I’ve got these places to go to, these plans to make

North star hear me callin’ and shine my way

North star hear me callin’ out your name

A thousand stars light up the sky like rays

I swear I won’t let you out of my sight again

North star hear me callin’ and shine my way

North star hear me callin’ and shine my way

North star hear me callin’ and shine my way

THE LAST TREE

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

What will we do when the last tree is gone
What will we see when everything is neon
What will we say when the sun has gone to bed
All of our dreams are made of plastic instead

When the last tree falls
Who will see it
When the last eagle calls
Who will hear it
When the water is all gone
Will we know what we have done
When the last tree falls

Who's got the biggest house, the biggest car
We're so busy looking at each other we can't see the stars
The air that we breathe is filled with dangerous things
Now we hide our faces from the beauty that is spring

When the last tree falls
Who will see it
When the last eagle calls
Who will hear it
When the water is all gone
Will we know what we have done
When the last tree falls

We don't have to gather every flower we see
We can let them live and die here naturally

Once upon a time we lived in harmony
A silent barter system with the land and the sea
We took what we needed but we always gave back
The cycle has been broken and the planet's getting mad

When the last tree falls
Who will see it
When the last eagle calls
Who will hear it
When the water is all gone
Will we know what we have done
When the last tree falls

MY BABY

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

My baby he's so fine
He can love me all the time
My baby

My baby's been around most of my life
I always knew I'd be his wife
My baby

I sit at home and stare at the wall
Thinkin' 'bout my baby

My baby works all night
Gets home drunk and starts a fight
My baby

My baby knows how to please
He begs forgiveness on his hands and his knees
So sweetly

I sit at home and cry and cry and cry
Waiting for my baby

Once in a lifetime someone will come along
Sing to you your favorite song
How could it ever, ever be wrong
No, no, no, no, not my baby

I'll clean his dirty shoes
I'll pretend I like the booze
Lipstick's not the only stain
I know this love, this love is not in vain
No, 'cause I got my baby

I sit at home and cry and cry and cry
Waiting for my baby

Once in a lifetime someone will come along
Sing to you your favorite song
How could it ever, ever be wrong
No, no, no, no, not my baby
No, no, no, no, not my baby...

LONELY ROAD

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

It's a lonely road
It's a long way to go
Only moon to light my way
I can't see by the day
It's a lonely road

I don't know what I'll find
An ocean a mountain to climb
Down this path I'll go
It's the only way I know
On this lonely road

Hear the silence that's hidden in the trees
The stillness of the night's beauty

It's a lonely road
I have so far to go
When the rain should fall
I want to feel it all
On this lonely road
On this lonely road
On this lonely road

THE MERMAID'S BIRTHDAY

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

A little girl liked to pretend
A mermaid was her secret friend
Only she could see
Only she could see

Once a year, she'd call the waves
"It's a special day let's celebrate
The mermaid's birthday
The mermaid's birthday"

Everybody knows a child just grows old
No one's really seen a mermaid swimming in the sea
Birthdays are reminders of the dreamers we used to be
Who has time for make believe?

The dolphins came, the whales they played
Everybody danced with the mermaid
On her birthday
The mermaid's birthday

The little girl began to sing
'Til her parents told her there was no such thing
As a mermaid's birthday
A mermaid's birthday

Everybody knows a child just grows old
No one's really seen a mermaid swimming in the sea
Birthdays are reminders of the dreamers we used to be
Who has time for make believe?

The fish they cried, "Come back and play!"
To the little girl who grew up that day
On the mermaid's birthday
The mermaid's birthday

Evening came they all went home
The mermaid was all alone
On her birthday
The mermaid's birthday

Everybody knows a child just grows old
No one's really seen a mermaid swimming in the sea
Birthdays are reminders of the dreamers we used to be
Who has time for make believe?

The mermaid whispered in the little girl's ear
"Now don't be sad, I'll come back next year…"

I DON'T KNOW

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

Why is it so hard to follow a dream
Why is it so hard to live happily
Why are we scared of the things we cannot see
How did this happen to me

I don't know, know, know
Know, know, know
I don't know if I'll ever know

Why can't we stand where the ocean meets the sky
Why do these mountains stand so high
Where are the answers that I can never find
How can I rest my troubled mind

I don't know, know, know
Know, know, know
I don't know if I'll ever know

I don't know, know, know
Know, know, know
I don't know if I'll ever know

A single star shines alone tonight
How did it ever get so bright
I don't know

Why is the moon so far away
Why is there pain in the things that people say
The world just falls apart a little more each day
How did we let it get this way

I don't know, know, know
Know, know, know
I don't know if I'll ever know

I don't know, know, know
Know, know, know
I don't know if I'll ever know

BALLERINA GIRL

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

Forty long years she did her time

Crunching numbers at her desk from nine to five

On her final day, she drove away

Said she had this dream and now she didn’t want to wait

To be a ballerina, ballerina girl again

Touching the stars

They can't really be that far

To be a ballerina, ballerina girl again

Like in Swan Lake, she's not too late

Ballerina girl

She saw someone dancing by the side of the road

Just a little girl all dressed up in her ballet clothes

As she watched her spin around, an imaginary queen

Said she knew they weren't that different for they both had this dream

To be a ballerina, ballerina girl again

Touching the stars

Oh they’re really not that far

To be a ballerina, ballerina girl again

Like in Swan Lake, she's not too late

Ballerina girl

They said she’d never get to her first pirouette

But how she spun and she had only just begun

Then she danced for so long and so hard

Knew she was that little girl with her eyes full of stars

Now she’s 85 and she’s never felt more alive

She’s teaching other dreamers you can dream at anytime

To be a ballerina, ballerina girl again

Touching the stars

Oh they’re really not that far

To be a ballerina, ballerina girl again

Like in Swan Lake, she's not too late

Ballerina girl

Like in Swan Lake, she's not too late

Ballerina girl

THE SOUND OF THE SEA

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

We live alone
On an island of stone
My husband, three children and me

We keep the light
That shines through the night
For the ships as they travel to sea

Sometimes in all of this silence
I hear the waves calling to me
They tease me with dreams of such far away things
It's only the sound of the sea

The children are fed
Safely in bed
I pick up my candle and flee

With such a small light
It's just me and the night
The moon and her empathy

Sometimes in all of this silence
I hear the waves calling to me
They tease me with dreams of such far away things
It's only the sound of the sea

How the ocean sang to me
A siren song so sweet
Now I am the sound of the sea

Sometimes in all of this silence
I hear the waves calling to me
They tease me with dreams of such far away things
It's only the sound of the sea

It's only the sound of the sea

I WATCH THE SHIPS GO BY

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

A box of paints, a poem or two
Sit in the corner of my room
Maybe one day I'll find a way
To do all the things that I want to do
And I won't have to be a dreamer anymore

I sit and watch the ships go by
They get to sail away, I wonder why can't I
Sail away too
Into the sky it looks so blue
I would like to sail away too

I have a list of all the things I'd like to see
Before the end of my life comes to reclaim me
And I could touch the moon if it wanted me to
I'd run away and become a planet too
Don't want to be a dreamer anymore

I sit and watch the ships go by
They get to sail away, I wonder why can't I
Sail away too
Into the sky it looks so blue
I would like to sail away too

So many things I want to do

I sit and watch the ships go by
They get to sail away, I wonder why can't I
Sail away too
Into the sky it looks so blue
I would like to sail away too
Into the sky so blue...

I sit and watch the ships go by
They get to sail away, I wonder why can't I
Sail away too
Into the sky it looks so blue
I would like to sail away too
Into the sky so blue
Maybe one day I will sail away too
I watch the ships go by

LA LOCA

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

Here's a story of the madness
The princess of Castile
500 years have passed us
Since she met her king
She thought she knew their love was true
But she was just sixteen
When she lost her heart, she lost her mind
They called her La Loca
The crazy queen

For those who love too much
Who give with all their hearts
La Loca sings

When first his eyes beheld her
How he drew her close
But as the fires were dying
She became so cold
The sleepless nights, the endless fights
She knew not what to do
He locked her in a tower, said she could not rule
The crazy queen

For those who love too much
Who give with all their hearts
La Loca sings
La Loca sings

There are those who still remember
The pretty Spanish queen
The one who's only madness
Was to love her king
On the day he died, oh how she cried
They would not set her free
They kept her in her tower and threw away the key
The crazy queen

For those who love too much
Who give with all their hearts
La Loca sings
La Loca sings
La Loca sings

LADY CHARLOTTE

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

Lady Charlotte it’s time to go

Leave behind the only life you know

It’s warmer in the garden below

Sometimes this castle can get so col

On a dark and moonless night

You said goodbye

For love

You did it all for love

All for love

You did it all for love

You’d cross oceans, live in distant lands

With just one life you’ve got to do all that you can

They said he was a simple man

Simple was the reason why you ran

If it’s hard you never say

You know it was the only way

For love

You did it all for love

All for love

You did it all for love

And when your children cry to see

The land of Irish mystery

You take their hands and whisper gently

For love

You did it all for love

All for love

You did it all for love

For love

You did it all for love

All for love

You did it all for love

You did it all for love

CANADIAN BELLE

(written by Lauren Lapointe)

When I open my mouth to speak
People are wondering what's wrong with me
I talk real funny where am I from?
This, my friend, is a conundrum

'Cause I'm a Northern girl in a Southern place
Might as well be from outer space
I say "eh" and "y'all" as well
I'm a Canadian Belle

I like hockey but I sure don't ski
Snow's real pretty, white's no good on me
Give me some grits with lots of cheese
And you can say "yes ma'am" to me all you please

'Cause I'm a Northern girl in a Southern place
Might as well be from outer space
I say "eh" and "y'all" as well
I'm a Canadian Belle
I'm a Canadian Belle

Language or color, all the trouble's the same
People pickin' fights, just another name
I'm not real used to guns and crime
But I like wearing shorts in the winter just fine

Palmetto bugs don't make sense to me
Why give wings to something so ugly?
Give me mint juleps or some unsweet tea
And I won't even mind the humidity

'Cause I'm a Northern girl in a Southern place
Might as well be from outer space
I say "eh" and "y'all" as well
I'm a Canadian Belle
I'm a Canadian Belle

Canadians with their hearts of gold
Will warm you even when it's cold
Then there's Southern hospitality
Not much difference far as I can see

'Cause I'm a Northern girl in a Southern place
Might as well be from outer space
I say "eh" and "y'all" as well
I'm a Canadian Belle

'Cause I'm a Northern girl in a Southern town
I can't tell if I'm up or down
But I like both and it's just as well
'Cause I'm a Canadian Belle
I'm a Canadian Belle
I'm a Canadian Belle
